Jaffa: A Guide to Gentrification
Jaffa, once a major port in the Mediterranean, became one of the most expensive cities in the world, an international tourist center close to Tel Aviv.Tourists, partygoers and its residents were charmed by Jaffa’s oriental style and romantic authenticity, but beneath the shiny surface lurk racism, greed and injustice. This 2022 film tells us how the gentrification by Jewish citizens came to be.
After many years of deliberate criminal governmental neglect, Jaffa has been rediscovered as a coveted investment opportunity and a true real estate gem. The film follows the personal struggle of the Arab veteran residents against the threat of eviction orders and reveals the metamorphosis that the city is going through, uncovering both its social and political essence.
Next to Tel Aviv and on the shores of the Mediterranean, the value of the land rises exuberantly at the time, resulting in extremely high rent for hundreds of families who have lived there for generations leading to evictions.
Simultaneously, governmental institutions are carrying out brutal evictions while the profits are exclusively enjoyed by the Jewish developers and the state.
JAFFA - A GUIDE TO GENTRIFICATION shows the price Jaffa residents have to pay for their own land taken from them by the Israeli state.
