My Gaza On-line
Palestinian filmmaker Mohamed Jabaly’s 2020 short film follows the interactions with friends and family back home in Gaza while living in exile in Northern Norway, not being able to return. Jabaly’s first award-winning feature AMBULANCE was released a few years prior, and his latest film LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL – AL HAYA HELWA premiered in November 2023 to great acclaim and broad distribution. Together, the three films form a trilogy on Exile from Palestine.“Living in exile was not a choice: over the past 6 years, I have been living at a distance from family and friends. A choice that I didn't make due to the closing borders, but I ended up living it surrounded by different challenges like the ongoing siege over my city of Gaza and the depression of its people. Over the last 14 years, the situation in Gaza has only deteriorated. Following what is happening there from a distance is not easy. Still, it's the only way to keep updated through social media.
Living the arctic life in Northern Norway was a new change in my life. I’m not used to the extreme weather condition. It made a big impact on my everyday life. Even the way of communication has changed and got affected by this distance.
The internet has become the only way of communication between Gaza and me. Including all the news that I received while living in a different part of the world. It's different from being at the front, the way I used to try capturing the moment and what was happening around me.
So, I decided to make this experimental film to express my feelings towards my city. To show and tell the challenge of finding a new way to tell such a story from the same medium which I’m using every day for communication with my people in Gaza. That made me understand more how important the internet can be in our lives and how that can change our lives in the way that we are using and dealing with it. ”
